Saturday Night

Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys

Album · 1992 · Freeland FRC-CD 643

Saturday Night (Freeland FRC-CD 643, 1993) is the secular half of a double-disc project recorded at Music Row Audio in Nashville in 1992. The Clinch Mountain Boys — Ralph Stanley (banjo), Junior Blankenship (guitar), Ernie Thacker (guitar, mandolin), Jack Cooke (bass), and dual fiddlers Curly Ray Cline and Art Stamper — are joined by an extraordinary guest roster: Dwight Yoakam, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, George Jones, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, and Bill Monroe. The project signaled a new phase of Stanley's late-career visibility, assembling country and bluegrass's broadest cross-section of talent around his uncompromising traditional sound, prefiguring by nearly a decade the mainstream recognition he would receive through O Brother, Where Art Thou?
