Scenic Roots cover

Scenic Roots was released by Sugar Hill in 1990 (LP SH-3785; cassette and CD editions carry SH-C-3785 and SH-CD-3785). The Bluegrass Discography lists it as recorded at Bias Recording Co. in Springfield, Virginia. The band is Lou Reid on guitar, Ben Eldridge on banjo, John Duffey on mandolin, Mike Auldridge on resonator guitar and T. Michael Coleman on bass; Reid, Duffey, Auldridge and Coleman are credited with vocals on every one of the twelve tracks. The same five players are listed on the previous Seldom Scene studio album, A Change of Scenery (1988), which also has Robbie Magruder on drums.

The program includes “The Long Black Veil,” “Highway of Heartache,” “Red Georgia Clay,” “Distant Train” and “How Mountain Girls Can Love.” Duffey remained on mandolin for the albums that followed: the live album Scene 20, recorded at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, on 29 November 1991 and released in 1992; Like We Used to Be (1994); and Dream Scene (1996), made with Dudley Connell on guitar and Fred Travers on dobro.
