The Secret of the Waterfall (Old Homestead Records OHS-90008, 1972) is a studio album from Rual Yarbrough and His Dixiemen, the Alabama-rooted bluegrass ensemble co-founded by banjoist Yarbrough and guitarist Jake Landers, who had worked together since the mid-1950s in the Dixie Gentlemen. Yarbrough plays banjo throughout; Landers plays guitar and sings lead; James Bryan plays fiddle; and Don Patton holds the bass. The title song, written by Landers, became a bluegrass standard most widely circulated through the Country Gentlemen's recording, and its presence here documents the piece in close proximity to its composer. Recorded at Old Homestead's studio in Brighton, Michigan, the album presents the ensemble's traditional Alabama bluegrass in the stripped acoustic format characteristic of the independent documentation work the Old Homestead label sustained across its catalog.
