Session 2 is the second album by Sideline, released on 2 June 2015 on Mountain Fever Records (MFR 150602). The band began as a part-time project for players with other jobs: banjoist Steve Dilling had been with Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out for twenty years, bassist Jason Moore played with Mountain Heart, and guitarist Skip Cherryholmes had joined Lou Reid & Carolina after a break from his family’s band, Cherryholmes. The group went full-time after Session 1 came out on Mountain Fever in 2013.
On Session 2, Brian Aldridge sings lead on all eleven tracks, with Dilling, Moore and Cherryholmes on harmony. Aldridge plays mandolin on two of them; Aaron Ramsey plays it on most of the others and also produced and mixed the album, and Ron Stewart plays fiddle throughout as a guest. The material includes the traditional “Going Across the Sea” and “Handsome Molly,” Larry Keel’s “Mountain Song,” “Mountain Girl” by Jacob Landers (the album’s first single), “Don’t Come Running” by Don Parmley and David Parmley, and “Lord Don’t Leave Me Here,” credited to Doyle Lawson, Charlie Waller and Robert Yates Sr.
