Shifting Sands of Time (Rounder 11661 0484 2, circa 2004) is a recording from Tony Trischka, the New York banjo innovator whose career has spanned everything from traditional bluegrass to free improvisation to folk balladry. The ensemble here includes violinist Matt Glaser, vocalists Jennifer Kimball and Lucy Kaplansky, Jim Whitney, and John McGann — a lineup that places Trischka in the acoustic folk-Americana context rather than strictly in bluegrass. Trischka's banjo playing has long pushed at the perimeters of what the instrument can do, and this recording reflects his comfort working with musicians whose roots are as much in jazz and folk as in the mountain string-band tradition. The album is characteristically Trischka: deeply engaged with American acoustic music at large while maintaining the banjo as its organizing principle.
