Singing All Day and Dinner on the Ground

Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys

Album · 1970 · Decca DL 75226

Singing All Day and Dinner on the Ground is a gospel album by Jimmy Martin and the Sunny Mountain Boys, issued by Decca in 1970 (DL 75226) with Owen Bradley producing. Six of its eleven tracks were recorded at a single session on 5 May 1970 at Bradley’s Barn in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. The other five are sacred sides Martin had cut in Nashville between 1960 and 1962. Two of those had come out as singles, and three had not been issued before.

At the 1970 session Martin sang lead and played guitar, with Alan Munde on banjo, Doyle Lawson on mandolin, Vernon Derrick on fiddle and Joe Zinkan on bass. Lawson sang tenor and Derrick baritone, with Gloria Flickinger on high baritone and Brent Burkett on bass. The six songs were the title piece, written by Martin and Bill Yates; “Lift Your Eyes to Jesus” and “Help Thy Brother,” both by Martin, Derrick and Glen Click; Carl Story and William York’s “My Lord Keeps a Record”; “Shake Hands with Mother Again”; and “When the Savior Reached Down for Me.” Decca paired the title song with “Help Thy Brother” on a single, 32731, in September 1970.

The older tracks feature Paul Williams on mandolin and tenor. “God Is Always the Same” (14 January 1960) has J. D. Crowe on banjo and Benny Martin on fiddle. Crowe also plays on the traditional “Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand” (17 August 1960). Paul Craft plays banjo on “Little Angels in Heaven” (30 October 1961). “Stormy Waters” and “A Beautiful Life,” both written by Martin and Williams, were recorded on 30 August 1962 at the Columbia studio in Nashville with Bill Emerson on banjo. Williams sings the lead on “Stormy Waters.” In 1973 the album was reissued as MCA-137.
