"Del McCoury Sings Bluegrass," released in 1968 on Arhoolie Records (Arhoolie F 5006), is Del McCoury's debut album as a bandleader, recorded on December 9–10, 1967 in California with Bill Emerson (banjo), Billy Baker (fiddle), Wayne Yates (mandolin), and Tommy Neal (bass) — all fellow alumni of Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys. Made just after McCoury left Monroe's band at age twenty-four, the record captures his crystalline high tenor at its earliest prime. Arhoolie reissued it in 1992 as "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight" with two bonus tracks added. The original LP remains the foundational document of McCoury's career, predating his formation of the Del McCoury Band and his subsequent rise to become the most honored artist in IBMA history.
