Songs from the Mountain is a 1998 album by Dirk Powell, Tim O’Brien and John Herrmann on Howdy Skies Records. Its eighteen tracks are, in the words of the liner note, mostly old fiddle and banjo tunes, ballads and hymns that Charles Frazier’s novel Cold Mountain mentions directly or indirectly. Powell, who was born in Ohio into a family with deep Kentucky roots, later worked on the film of Cold Mountain.

O’Brien produced the album. Powell plays banjo, fiddle and piano, Herrmann plays banjo and mandolin and sings, and O’Brien sings and plays guitar, mandolin and fiddle. Guests credited include Nick Forster and Charles Sawtelle on guitar and Mollie O’Brien, Peter Wernick, Andrea Zonn, Glenn Zankey and Ronnie McCoury on vocals. The program runs from instrumental sets such as “Mountain Air / Washington’s March / Bonaparte’s Retreat” and “Cluck Old Hen” to ballads such as “Raleigh and Spencer,” “The Blackest Crow,” “Mole in the Ground” and “Fair Margaret and Sweet William,” and hymns including “When I Die I’ll Live Again” and “Angel Band.”
