Songs That Are Mostly Older Than Us (Native and Fine Records, 2016) is a collaborative album featuring Chattanooga fiddler Fletcher Bright and banjo player Bill Evans, with guitar by Norman Blake and cello by Nancy Blake. Bright plays fiddle throughout in one of his last recording appearances before his death in December 2017 at age eighty-six; Evans plays banjo; Norman Blake contributes guitar; and Nancy Blake plays cello. The program draws from the Southern fiddle and old-time song tradition that Bright had played across eight decades as a musician in the Southeast. The gathering of this ensemble — two generations of old-time players sharing a commitment to the same repertoire — gives the album its particular warmth, and the title acknowledges a shared inheritance that each musician carried into the room.
