The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo—titled "Sweetheart of the Radio" in the catalog, an apparent typo—released on Columbia Records (CS 9670) in August 1968, is widely regarded as the founding document of country-rock. Gram Parsons joins Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman for sessions in Nashville; Lloyd Green plays pedal steel guitar; John Hartford, fiddle, banjo, and guitar; Roy Huskey Jr., upright bass; Earl P. Ball, piano; and Clarence White, guitar. Parsons's lead vocals were largely overdubbed in the final mix due to an Acuff-Rose publishing dispute. The repertoire—Bob Dylan, Merle Haggard, Woody Guthrie, and traditional material—set the template for country-rock crossover and was a direct precursor to Parsons's work with the Flying Burrito Brothers.
