That High Lonesome Sound

Old and in the Way

Album · 1996 · Acoustic Disc ACC 19

That High Lonesome Sound, the 1996 release from Old and in the Way, draws from live recordings of the short-lived but deeply influential supergroup that brought together Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Peter Rowan, Vassar Clements, and John Kahn in the mid-1970s. The title track and Catfish John anchor a set that demonstrates how Garcia's rhythm guitar and ensemble instincts translated seamlessly into an acoustic bluegrass context. Lonesome L.A. Cowboy, a country-flavored number, adds tonal variety without disrupting the session's coherence. Old and in the Way occupied a unique cultural position, introducing thousands of rock listeners to bluegrass through the Grateful Dead's audience, and these recordings carry both the informal energy and the musical seriousness that made that crossover genuine rather than novelty.
