The Bluegrass Sound, recorded February 14-15, 1968 a week before the King sessions for Over the Sunset Hill, was released on Jalyn — an independent label partly underwritten by Osburn Thorpe, who wrote five of the twelve songs and the liner notes in exchange for copies he could sell. Frank Wakefield filled in on mandolin when Melvin Goins couldn't make the dates, and Larry Sparks and Curly Ray Cline were among the Clinch Mountain Boys at the session. The Jalyn LPs featured more mandolin work than the contemporaneous King material; the album sits as a fascinating side-channel of Ralph Stanley's busy 1968 — the year he was rebuilding his catalog after Carter's death and committing to whatever opportunities presented themselves.
