The Blues Are Still the Blues, released in 2015, offered the Traditional Grass a vehicle for exploring the blues dimension that has always run alongside the Scotch-Irish and gospel streams in the music's genetic makeup. Bill Monroe was explicit about the blues influence on his music, and the earliest bluegrass recordings by Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys, the Stanley Brothers, and Flatt and Scruggs all carry the evidence of that influence in their modal harmonies and blue notes. A band calling themselves the Traditional Grass and recording an album about the blues was staking a clear claim about the genre's origins and about where its emotional power continues to reside.
