Compilation · 1998

The Complete Hank Williams was released by Mercury on 22 September 1998 (catalog number 314 536 077-2) as a ten-disc box set, timed for what would have been Williams’s 75th birthday. It has 225 recordings, 53 of them previously unreleased, running from his Sterling Records sessions of December 1946 to his last session before his death in 1953. They include the Sterling and MGM studio sessions, demos, and radio, television and concert performances, and include 33 hit singles. The box was produced by Colin Escott, Kira Florita and the Country Music Foundation, with Luke Lewis as executive producer.

The set comes with two books: The Stories, with essays by Escott and Daniel Cooper, a timeline and comments from other musicians, and The Music, which holds the discs and has track listings and chart information. At the 1999 Grammy Awards it won Best Historical Album, for Escott, Florita, Kyle Young, Joseph Palmaccio and Tom Ruff, and Best Recording Package—Boxed.
