The Tumbling River and Other Stories is a 2016 self-released album by Toronto-based duo Chris Coole and Simone Schmidt. Coole (five-string clawhammer banjo, guitar)—a foundational figure in Toronto's roots and old-time scene for three decades—pairs with Schmidt (vocals, guitar), the Polaris-shortlisted singer-songwriter and Fiver front person whose work draws on psych-country and narrative folk traditions. The pair are joined by an ensemble of Toronto-area collaborators: Andrew Collins (mandolin, mandola, mandocello), Burke Carroll (pedal steel), Ivan Rosenberg (dobro), John Showman (fiddle), Brian Kobayakawa (bowed bass), and Kristine Schmitt (vocals). The eight-track program mixes original compositions with selected covers, sitting at the intersection of old-time country, Appalachian balladry, and literary songwriting.
