Time Stands Still (Rounder 82161-0479-2, released 28 August 2001) is Ron Stewart’s first solo album in 22 years. At the time he was playing banjo, guitar and fiddle in the Lynn Morris Band, and Morris produced the record, with Stewart as co-producer and Ken Irwin of Rounder as executive producer. It was recorded mostly at Doobie Shea Studios in Boones Mill, Virginia, with “Riding the Saranac” recorded and mixed by Stewart himself at Sleepy Valley Ranch; the sessions were mixed at Bias Recorders in Springfield, Virginia.
Stewart plays banjo on most tracks, fiddle and lead guitar, and sings lead on “The Girl I Love Don’t Pay Me No Mind,” “Time Stands Still,” “Gonna Have Myself a Ball” and “She’s My Girl.” The liner notes say he plays a French-made fiddle and a 1937 Gibson TB-1 conversion banjo with a Vintage tone ring. Jesse Brock is on mandolin, Marshall Wilborn on bass (and lead vocal on “Don’t Ever Take My Picture Down”), Dudley Connell on rhythm guitar and Rob Ickes on resophonic guitar; Sammy Shelor plays banjo on “Fiddler’s Dream” and “Soldier’s Joy,” and Wayne Taylor sings lead on “Gotta Travel On.” Seven of the thirteen tracks are instrumentals.
