“Gonna Have Myself a Ball” was recorded by Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, who released it as a single in 1965, during the years their Foggy Mountain Boys were among the leading acts in bluegrass.
The song is an upbeat declaration of cutting loose. Free of trouble, or determined to forget it, the singer announces that he is going to have himself a ball — a bright, good-time number set against the heartbreak songs around it.
The song was later revived in bluegrass. The version heard here is by the Lonesome River Band.
