A Living Legend, recorded in 1976 by Lester Flatt and the Nashville Grass, finds Flatt in the final years of his career — he died in 1979 — performing with a band he had built after the celebrated split with Earl Scruggs in 1969. The Nashville Grass was a capable if less storied ensemble than the Foggy Mountain Boys, and Flatt's own authority as a vocalist and rhythm guitarist gave the recordings a dignity that younger audiences were beginning to discover through the country and folk revival circuit. The album's title, self-applied, was also accurate: Flatt was by this point a recognized architect of the music, his contributions to bluegrass guitar technique and vocal style thoroughly woven into the genre's fabric.
