Together, a duet album by Laurie Lewis and Kathy Kallick, was released in 1991 on Kaleidoscope Records (K 44) and reissued on CD by Rounder in 1995 (Rounder CD 0318). Lewis and Kallick, who had started the Good Ol’ Persons together in 1975, produced it themselves. It was recorded during Valentine’s week 1991 at Dave Wellhausen’s studio in San Francisco.
Kallick plays guitar on all thirteen tracks, and Lewis plays fiddle and bass. The rest of the lineup changes from song to song: Tom Bekeny, John Reischman, Tom Rozum and Butch Waller play mandolin, Tony Furtado plays banjo, Sally Van Meter plays Dobro, and Charles Sawtelle adds a second guitar on “That Dawn the Day You Left Me” and “Count Your Blessings.” Lewis sings lead on most of the songs and Kallick takes the lead on others, including “Just Like Rain,” “Hideaway,” “Lost John” and “Maverick,” with Rozum joining on a third harmony part on three songs.
The songs come from several places. “Going Up on the Mountain,” “Lost John” and “Little Annie” are credited as traditional or to A.P. Carter, “Don’t You See That Train” and “Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar” to the Delmore Brothers, and “Is the Blue Moon Still Shining” to Melissa Monroe. Kallick wrote “Count Your Blessings” and “Don’t Leave Your Little Girl All Alone,” and co-wrote “Just Like Rain” with Reischman. Lewis co-wrote “The Touch of the Master’s Hand” with M.B. Welch. “Maverick” is the theme from the television series, credited to David Buttolph and Paul Webster.
