Carolina Star and I'll Stay Around favor his more intimate vocal register. Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone and I've Waited as Long as I Can carry the fatalism common to the older repertoire, delivered here without sentimentality. The record is an honest portrait of an artist fully in command of his material.
