Tony Rice Plays and Sings Bluegrass, a 1993 Rounder release, finds Rice working with characteristic economy and directness. By this point he had established himself as the defining flatpicker of his generation, and this album demonstrates the range he could bring to that identity. Girl from the North Country, a Bob Dylan composition, sits alongside traditional selections like I Wonder Where You Are Tonight and Thunderclouds of Love, illustrating Rice's fluency across the folk-bluegrass boundary. Carolina Star and I'll Stay Around favor his more intimate vocal register. Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone and I've Waited as Long as I Can carry the fatalism common to the older repertoire, delivered here without sentimentality. The record is an honest portrait of an artist fully in command of his material.
