Traveler was released on 12 August 2003 by Howdy Skies Records, Tim O’Brien’s own label, and licensed to Sugar Hill Records (SUG-CD-3978). O’Brien produced it. It was recorded at Ground Star Studios in Nashville, with additional recording and mixing at The Dog House, also in Nashville, and Gary Paczosa recorded and mixed it.

Eleven of the twelve songs are credited to O’Brien, some of them co-written: “Another Day” with Darrell Scott, “Forty-Nine Keep On Talkin’” with Ray Bonneville, and “Travelers” with Alessandro Massa. “I’ve Endured” is by Ola Belle Reed.

O’Brien plays guitar, mandolin and bouzouki and sings. The core band is John Doyle (guitar and bouzouki), Casey Driessen (fiddle), Dirk Powell (banjo, accordion and bass) and Kenny Malone (percussion), with Dennis Crouch on bass on several tracks. Jerry Douglas plays resonator guitar on “Restless Spirit Wandering” and lap steel on “Fell Into Her Deep Blue Eyes,” Edgar Meyer plays arco bass on that song and on “Travelers,” and Béla Fleck plays banjo on “Another Day.” Darrell Scott, Jon Randall Stewart, Jonell Mosser and Ray Bonneville contribute vocals, and Bonneville plays harmonica.
