"Twenty," released in November 2021 on Pinecastle Records (PRC-1258), is the label debut of Deeper Shade of Blue — a Monroe, North Carolina traditional bluegrass band marking approximately two decades of existence with this seventh album. The band features Troy Pope (guitar, vocals), Jason Fraley (mandolin, vocals), Frank Poindexter (dobro, vocals), Scott Burgess (bass, vocals), and Steve Wilson (banjo), known for their tight three-part harmonies and dobro-forward sound. Signing with Pinecastle — one of bluegrass's most prominent specialty labels — represented a step up in profile after years of self-release. The album includes a track written by the late Larry Rice and a cover of Larry Gatlin's "Broken Lady," mixing original songwriting with classic material in the straightforwardly traditional style the band has sustained throughout its run.
