Deeper Shade of Blue
Deeper Shade of Blue is a bluegrass band from North Carolina, formed in 2000 by the banjo player Jim Fraley, the mandolinist Jason Fraley and the bassist Brian Hinson. Its sound rests on three-part harmony singing and the Dobro of Frank Poindexter, and after a run of self-produced albums it recorded for Mountain Fever and then Pinecastle.
By the time of Bluegrass to the Bone (2010), issued on the band’s own To the Bone label, the lineup was the two Fraleys and Hinson with Troy Pope on guitar and Poindexter on Dobro. Earlier self-released albums included Straight Drive, The Time Has Come and the gospel set Who Will Pray?, and No More Blues followed in 2012; in all the band made six albums of its own. Scott Burgess replaced Hinson on bass in 2015.
Steam (Mountain Fever, June 2018) took in “Hook It,” “Uncle Josh the Dobro King,” “Rain and Snow” and “How Great Thou Art.” Jim Fraley retired from the band in 2020 and Steve Wilson took over the banjo. In 2021 the band signed with Pinecastle, and its first single for the label was Larry Gatlin’s “Broken Lady,” with Burgess singing lead over the harmonies of Pope and Jason Fraley. The album that followed, Twenty, released on 5 November 2021 to mark the band’s twentieth year and billed as its seventh studio album, also included “Whether or Not,” written by Poindexter and Brink Brinkman, and three songs written by Wyatt Rice or Larry Rice, among them “If You Only Knew.”
