Up 18 North, released in 2002, represented a significant step forward for the Kruger Brothers, sharpening the synthesis of Appalachian tradition and European chamber sensibility that had distinguished their earlier work. The trio of Jens Kruger on banjo, Uwe Kruger on guitar and vocals, and Joel Landsberg on bass had by this point fully established their home base in the North Carolina mountains and deepened their connections to the regional music community. 'Carolina in the Fall' became one of the more recognized items in their catalog, reflecting the genuine affection the Krugers had developed for the Southern landscape that had drawn them from Switzerland. The album demonstrated their compositional range and ability to move fluidly between bluegrass, folk, and classical influences.
