Best known for Guitar

Uwe Kruger is the German-born, North Carolina-based guitarist and lead singer of the Kruger Brothers — a Swiss-raised trio whose blend of European chamber sensibility with Appalachian repertoire has made them an honorary–citizen-recognized fixture of the Wilkes County music scene.

  • Born April 24, 1961 in Germany; raised in Switzerland from infancy in a family where everyone played music casually.
  • Began performing publicly in 1973 alongside younger brother Jens; the duo was working professionally as European street musicians by 1979.
  • Brothers split in 1982; Uwe pursued country music while Jens went to the U.S. to perform with Bill Monroe; they reunited in 1987.
  • Co-founded the Kruger Brothers trio in 1995 with Swiss bassist Joel Landsberg; the trio debuted at MerleFest in 1997 and relocated to Wilkes County, North Carolina in 2002–2003.
  • Lead singer, primary songwriter, and guitarist of the Kruger Brothers.
  • Honorary citizen of North Carolina and of Calgary, Canada.
  • Inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame, the American Folk Music Hall of Fame, and the Wilkes County Hall of Fame.
  • Recipient (with Jens and the band) of the 2007 NEA Award for Artistic Excellence in collaboration with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra.
