Ashby Frank
Ashby Frank is a mandolin player, singer and songwriter from Davidson County, North Carolina, based in Nashville, who sang lead with Special Consensus in 2008 and 2009 and has since been one of the city’s regular fill-in mandolinists for touring bands. Since 2022 he has recorded under his own name for Mountain Home, and his recording of Terry Baucom’s “Knee Deep in Bluegrass” was the IBMA’s Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year in 2024.
He grew up in Tyro, near Lexington, and was something of a prodigy on the mandolin in his teens, though he also plays other instruments. The first bluegrass festival he went to was Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver’s at Denton, North Carolina, where Baucom was playing, and it was at the same festival, in the mid-1990s, that he made his first public appearance, leading a band he had put together for the Thursday-night opening slot with his older sister, Jeannie, singing. His first album, First Crossing, came out on Blue Road in 1999.
After college he moved to Nashville, and in 2008 he became the lead singer and mandolin player of Special Consensus. On its album Signs (Pinecastle, March 2009), recorded at La Garage in Nashville with Greg Cahill on banjo, Justin Carbone on guitar, Tim Crouch on fiddle, Randy Kohrs on Dobro and David Thomas on bass, he sings the lead on songs such as “Mountain Girl.” He also worked for a time in the Marty Raybon Band, and then settled into work as a fill-in for touring acts, playing with Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Lonesome River Band, the Earls of Leicester, John Cowan’s HercuLeons and Jerry Douglas, and in the all-star side groups the Mashville Brigade, where Baucom was his bandmate, and the Likely Culprits. By 2022 he was touring with Mountain Heart. He has also worked as an entertainer for a cruise line and was half of the comedy duo the Darrell Brothers.
His songs have been recorded by Junior Sisk (“The Story of the Day That I Died”), Amanda Cook (“Point of No Return”), Dale Ann Bradley (“Falling Down”) and Lindley Creek (“I Gotta Go”), as well as by the Lonesome River Band and Marty Raybon.
Mountain Home signed him in May 2022, and his first single for the label was Peter Rowan’s “Midnight Highway,” a song he had loved since hearing it at about fifteen, recorded with Jim VanCleve on fiddle, Seth Taylor on guitar, Matt Menefee on banjo, Gaven Largent on resonator guitar, Travis Anderson on bass and John Cowan singing harmony; it went to number one on bluegrass radio charts, and three more of his singles have done the same. The album Leaving Is Believing, his first since he was a teenager, followed on 10 February 2023. He recorded “Knee Deep in Bluegrass,” Baucom’s banjo instrumental, the day after Baucom’s funeral in December 2023, with Menefee, VanCleve, Taylor, Anderson and the drummer Tony Creasman, as a tribute to his friend; Mountain Home released it in March 2024, and it won the IBMA award that year. His later singles include “God Gave Me Horses” (2024), “Blue Night” (2024), “Everybody’s Got Their Nine Pound Hammer” (2025) and “Mr. Engineer” (October 2025).
