Contemporary Bluegrass

The Pine Tree String Band was the name on a series of budget CDs of fiddle tunes, banjo pieces and hymns released in 2003 by Columbia River, a label of the Allegro Corporation, the Portland, Oregon, music distributor. The players named on them are Sammy Lind, on fiddle or banjo, and Caleb Klauder, on mandolin, two founders of Portland’s Foghorn Stringband; the other musicians are not credited.

Six ten-track albums came out under the name in 2003. Bluegrass Favorites and Country Mountain Favorites feature Lind’s fiddle on pieces such as “June Apple,” “Hangman’s Reel,” “Kennesaw Mountain Rag,” “Breakin’ Up Christmas” and “Brown’s Dream,” along with songs such as “Cotton Eyed Joe” and “Lonesome Road.” On Old Time Banjo and Country Mountain Banjo he switches to banjo for “Salt Creek,” “Arkansas Traveler,” “Reuben’s Banjo,” “Cluck Old Hen” and “Sandy Boys.” The two hymn albums, Bluegrass Hymns and Country Mountain Hymns, draw on gospel songs such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Farther Along,” “Angel Band,” “I Am a Pilgrim” and “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” with the ballad “Unquiet Grave” also on the first. Billy Oskay recorded the sessions.

In 2004 Allegro reissued the material in two fifteen-track compilations, Great Bluegrass Hymns and Best of Bluegrass; the second credits vocals to both Klauder and Lind. The CDs appeared in the same years as the Foghorn Stringband’s own first albums, Rattlesnake Tidal Wave (2002) and Reap What You Sow (2004), and the Pine Tree discs point listeners to the Foghorn Music website.
