The Seldom Scene formed in Bethesda, Maryland in 1971 — John Duffey (formerly of Country Gentlemen) on mandolin, with Mike Auldridge, Tom Gray, Ben Eldridge, and John Starling. Their material was outside the traditional canon — songs by Eric Anderson, Phil Ochs, Steve Goodman — and their tight harmonies and progressive arrangements made them one of the most-influential bands of the era.
