“Little Rock Getaway” was written by the jazz pianist Joe Sullivan, who recorded it in 1935. A piece that bridges ragtime and jazz, it was later given lyrics by Carl Sigman.
The tune found its way into bluegrass largely through the banjo playing of Don Reno, while Chet Atkins and Jimmy Bryant cut country versions. Its bright, ragtime-rooted melody made it a favorite showpiece for fast, melodic picking.
The tune crossed from jazz into the bluegrass instrumental repertoire. The version heard here is by the banjo player Alan Munde.
