Festival Favorites Revisited (Rounder 0311, 1993) is a twenty-track compilation of Alan Munde’s banjo recordings from his Festival Favorites albums for the Ridge Runner label: two volumes issued in 1980, followed by Nashville Sessions in 1982 and Southwest Sessions in 1983. Munde has described it as a compilation of the best of those recordings, and a tab book of the banjo solos was published for it.

The program is mostly standard festival repertoire: “Salt Creek,” “Cripple Creek,” “Sally Goodin’,” “Devil’s Dream,” “Dusty Miller,” “Little Rock Getaway,” “Clinch Mountain Backstep,” “Shenandoah Valley Breakdown” and “John Hardy.” Because the tracks were recorded at different times, the supporting players change from piece to piece. Joe Carr plays guitar on most, Roland White mandolin on most and Michael Anderson bass on all but one; the fiddlers include Sam Bush, Robert Bowlin and Jim “Texas Shorty” Chancellor, and Marty Stuart (guitar) and Jerry Douglas (dobro) join on “John Hardy” and “No Title Yet Blues.” “Liberty” is a duet for two banjos with Bob French.

Munde, born in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1946, was a founding member of Country Gazette and the only original member to remain at its helm through the band’s twenty-plus-year run. Roland White, Joe Carr and Mike Anderson were among the players who joined the group in the mid-1970s. Munde taught in the bluegrass and country music program at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, from 1986 to 2007.
