He started out on bass with Hagar’s Mountain Boys, and in the 2013 season he played guitar and sang lead with Grasstowne. In December 2013 Russell Moore named him IIIrd Tyme Out’s new bass player, together with the banjo player Keith McKinnon, after the departures of Steve Dilling and Edgar Loudermilk; the new lineup went on the road in January 2014. The two were first heard on record on It’s About Tyme (Break a String, released 4 September 2015), which included Mark Brinkman and Becky Buller’s “Cotton Town” and Josh Miller’s “Enough for You.” By then he had been off the road for several months, and in September 2015 Jerry Cole, who had been filling in, was hired as the band’s bass player.
