Steve Mandell (c. 1941–2018) was the guitarist on “Dueling Banjos,” the 1972 recording with banjoist Eric Weissberg that reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy for Best Country Instrumental Performance. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Mount Vernon and New Rochelle, New York, he came up through the New York folk and bluegrass scene of the early 1960s.
