An Empty Mansion: In Memory of Carter Stanley appeared on the small Rimrock label in 1967, six months after Carter Stanley's death the previous December. The recordings themselves were older — cut at Wayne Raney's modest studio in Concord, Arkansas in December 1965 while the Stanleys were briefly between King Records contracts — and consisted entirely of gospel material the brothers had been singing on radio and at schoolhouse shows for years. The Rimrock release reframed the sessions as a tribute, and the addition of Carter's name to the title gave the gospel program an elegiac second life. Ralph Stanley would carry on under the Clinch Mountain Boys name almost immediately, but this stands as one of the last working documents of the brothers together.
