Back Home Again was released by Rounder Records on January 11, 2000, Rhonda Vincent’s return to bluegrass after two country albums for Giant Records, Written in the Stars (1993) and Trouble Free (1996), which had not sold well enough for the label to keep her. She had grown up playing bluegrass in her family’s Sally Mountain Show in Missouri, and after leaving Giant she formed the Rage and began playing festivals.
Vincent produced the album with Ronny Light, who also recorded it at Lighthouse Sound Studio in Nashville. She has said she recorded 24 songs and narrowed them to twelve, wanting a traditional sound. The musicians include Bryan Sutton on guitar, Marc Pruett and Steve Sutton on banjo, Ron Stewart and Luke Bulla on fiddle, her brother Darrin Vincent on bass and harmony, and Jerry Douglas on dobro on two tracks, with Vincent herself on mandolin; her father, Johnny Vincent, sings on two tracks. The songs include a bluegrass version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” and “Little Angels,” about preventing child sexual abuse, which came to her from a listener who handed her a tape of the song at a show in New Brunswick.
In 2000 the International Bluegrass Music Association named her Female Vocalist of the Year, the first of seven in a row, and in 2001 she and the Rage were its Entertainer of the Year.
