IIIrd Tyme Out

Album · 2001 · Rounder 11661 0487 2

Back to the MAC is IIIrd Tyme Out’s second live album from the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, a return to the hall where the band had recorded Live at the MAC, released in 1998. Rounder issued it on 2 October 2001, on CD (11661-0487-2) and cassette. Russell Moore, Steve Dilling and Mike Hartgrove are credited as producers.

The band had formed in Georgia in 1991, when Moore, bassist Ray Deaton and fiddler Hartgrove left Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. By this recording the lineup was Moore on guitar and lead vocals, Dilling on banjo, Wayne Benson on mandolin, Hartgrove on fiddle and Deaton on bass, with Deaton, Dilling and Benson singing harmony. It was Hartgrove’s last recording with the group; Greg Luck took over the fiddle the following year.

The songs are mostly older material. They include the Osborne Brothers’ “Medals for Mothers,” the old standard “Drifting Too Far from the Shore” with Deaton singing a bass line, George Jones’s “The Old, Old House,” and the country songs “Dim Lights, Thick Smoke” and “A Little Unfair.” “Lost John” and “East Tennessee Blues” are instrumentals. Between songs the disc keeps several short stretches of stage talk as separate tracks, including the band’s introductions of Benson and Moore.
