Bluegrass Time

Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys

Album · 1967 · Decca DL 4896

Blue Grass Time was released by Decca on 12 June 1967 (DL 4896 mono, DL 74896 stereo). Most of it was recorded at Columbia Recording Studio in Nashville between 14 October 1966 and 23 January 1967, after Bill Monroe had gone 19 months without recording. The Blue Grass Boys had changed completely in that time: Peter Rowan on guitar and vocals, Lamar Grier on banjo, Richard Greene on fiddle, and Monroe’s son James on bass and vocals, with Buddy Spicher added as second fiddle on “Pretty Fair Maiden in the Garden.”

James Monroe sings lead on “All the Good Times Are Past and Gone,” with his father on tenor and Rowan on baritone, and Rowan leads “Midnight on the Stormy Deep.” Bill Monroe sings lead on “That’s All Right,” “Blue Night” and “It Makes No Difference Now,” while “I Wonder Where You Are Tonight” and “When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again” are trio numbers with James Monroe and Rowan. “When My Blue Moon Turns to Gold Again,” backed with “Pretty Fair Maiden in the Garden,” was issued as a single in December 1966. “Turkey in the Straw” and “Dusty Miller” are instrumentals.

Two tracks come from earlier sessions. “Were You There,” a Monroe composition, was recorded on 20 March 1963 with Benny Williams on guitar, Bill Keith on banjo, Kenny Baker on fiddle and Bessie Lee Mauldin on bass. “Roll On Buddy,” a song by Teddy and Doyle Wilburn, was recorded on 28 January 1964 with Del McCoury on guitar, Joe Drumright on banjo, Williams and Joe Stuart on fiddles and Mauldin on bass.
