Buried in a Cape (self-released, 2018) is the debut solo album from Andrew Marlin, mandolinist and co-founder of the Chapel Hill duo Mandolin Orange (later renamed Watchhouse), recorded at The Butcher Shoppe studio in Nashville. Marlin plays mandolin throughout, with guitar on select tracks; Eli West contributes guitar and banjo; Christian Sedelmyer plays fiddle; and Clint Mullican holds the bass. Working outside the Mandolin Orange format, Marlin concentrates on instrumental compositions and songs that draw on old-time and country traditions with a leaner, more austere sensibility than the duo's joint recordings typically showed. The album reveals a side of Marlin's musical personality — spare, rhythmically focused, and less concerned with melodic warmth — that his better-known work had only partially suggested, and it stands as a distinct statement in his discography.
