Cool, Blue & Lonesome: Bluegrass for the Broken-Hearted (Sugar Hill SUG-CD 3944) is a thematic compilation from the Sugar Hill Records catalog assembling bluegrass love songs and heartbreak pieces from the label's extended roster of traditional and contemporary acoustic performers. Tony Rice plays guitar; Mike Auldridge plays dobro; Stuart Duncan plays fiddle; Lou Reid plays guitar and sings; T. Michael Coleman holds the bass; and Ron Rigsby contributes vocal and instrumental work. Sugar Hill's deep catalog of acoustic recordings — spanning the traditional and progressive ends of bluegrass and including many of the genre's most admired performers — made the label a natural source for a themed compilation presenting the sentimental and melancholy side of the repertoire. The program draws from across the label's archive to assemble a unified emotional statement from disparate recording contexts.
