Doc and Dawg Live at Acoustic Stage

Doc Watson and David Grisman

Album · 2018 · Acoustic Disc ACD-CD 50055

Doc & Dawg Live at Acoustic Stage was released by Acoustic Disc, David Grisman’s label, in 2018. The concert was recorded on 10 October 1997 on the Acoustic Stage in Hickory, North Carolina, so the release came 21 years after the performance and six years after Doc Watson’s death in 2012.

Watson plays guitar and sings, with Grisman on mandolin. Jack Lawrence and Watson’s grandson Richard Watson, each on guitar, join them. Grisman produced the album, Craig Miller was executive producer, and Larry Cummings made the recording. The two sets run to 37 tracks, including spoken introductions, among them “My Long Journey Home,” “Give Me Back My 15 Cents,” “Shady Grove,” “East Bound Freight Train,” “Walk On Boy” and “Cora Is Gone.” Watson and Grisman had known each other since the early 1960s, when Watson invited the teenaged Grisman on stage at Gerde’s Folk City in New York to play mandolin on “In the Pines.”
