Endless Oceans introduces The Tuttles with AJ Lee at an early stage of what would become one of the more consequential developments in 21st-century West Coast bluegrass. The Tuttle family — patriarch Jack on guitar and the Tuttle siblings including a young Molly Tuttle — anchors the ensemble, with the teenage AJ Lee already showing the vocal poise and songwriting instincts that would define her later work with the band Molly Tuttle would lead and Lee's own subsequent project Blue Summit. The arrangements draw on standard bluegrass instrumentation but lean toward the looser, less ornamented California sound that runs from the Kentucky Colonels through David Grisman's circles. Released independently from the Bay Area scene, the album sits in the small but documented body of early recordings by musicians who would go on to reshape progressive bluegrass in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
