Favorites is a 1987 compilation released by the Johnson Mountain Boys on Rounder Records (CD 11509), drawing highlights from the band's earlier studio output. The Washington, D.C.–area group—anchored by Dudley Connell (guitar, lead vocals), David McLaughlin (mandolin, vocals), Richard Underwood (banjo, vocals), Larry Robbins (bass), and Eddie Stubbs (fiddle)—emerged in 1979 as one of the leading traditionalist bands of their generation, championing the sounds of Bill Monroe and the Stanley Brothers at a time when progressive bluegrass dominated. This retrospective captures the straightforward, hard-driving sound that won the band a devoted following and helped rekindle interest in unadorned traditional bluegrass during the folk revival era.
