Jerry Garcia and David Grisman cover

Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, the 1991 debut release on Grisman's Acoustic Disc label, documents the musical friendship between the Grateful Dead's lead guitarist and the mandolin innovator who had known each other since the San Francisco folk revival of the 1960s. The album draws on old-time string band repertoire, jazz standards, and traditional bluegrass material — including "Walkin' Boss," a field holler-derived number — in a loose, acoustic setting free from the production expectations of either man's primary audience. Garcia's guitar work here is warm and unguarded, and Grisman's mandolin playing balances his characteristic dawg music jazz inflections with a genuine feeling for the older vernacular styles both men admired. The record introduced each artist to segments of the other's audience and stands as one of the more successful late-twentieth-century demonstrations of the common ground between bluegrass, folk, and American acoustic improvisation.
