Jerry Garcia / David Grisman was released on 23 August 1991 as the second album on Grisman’s Acoustic Disc label (ACD 2), after Dawg ’90. Jerry Garcia plays guitar and David Grisman mandolin, with Joe Craven on fiddle and percussion and Jim Kerwin on bass. It was recorded in the spring of 1991 at Dawg Studios in Mill Valley, California, and produced by Garcia and Grisman.

The nine tracks include Garcia’s lead vocals on “The Thrill Is Gone,” credited to Rick Darnell and Roy Hawkins; his own “Friend of the Devil,” written with John Dawson and Robert Hunter; and “Walkin’ Boss,” a traditional song arranged by Grisman and Garcia. “Two Soldiers” is also a traditional piece arranged by the pair. Irving Berlin’s “Russian Lullaby” and Hoagy Carmichael’s “Rockin’ Chair” are the other songs by outside writers. The remaining three are credited to the musicians themselves: “Grateful Dawg” to Garcia and Grisman, and “Dawg’s Waltz” and “Arabia,” both instrumentals, to Grisman. “Arabia” runs more than sixteen minutes. The album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
