John's Country Quartet, released in 1966 on Wango Records, was recorded at Ray Davis's modest radio studio at Johnny's Used Cars in Baltimore, where the Stanley Brothers had cut commercial material for radio play during their working relationship with Davis's record store and broadcasting operation. The album consists entirely of gospel-quartet numbers in the close-harmony arrangements the Stanleys had been honing for two decades, framed by the Clinch Mountain Boys lineup of the period. Reissued by County Records in 1973 as Long Journey Home, it stands as one of the last working documents of Carter and Ralph together — Carter died in December 1966, only weeks after its release.
