Just a Closer Walk with Thee is a Cliff Waldron and the New Shades of Grass gospel album released on Rebel SLP-1505, featuring Waldron on guitar and lead vocals, Mike Auldridge on resonator guitar, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Bill Poffinberger on mandolin, Ed Ferris on bass, and Dave Auldridge contributing additional instrumentation. The album is a devotional collection from the Washington, D.C.–area ensemble that helped define the progressive bluegrass sound of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mike Auldridge's Dobro work — restrained, melodically inventive, and perfectly integrated into the ensemble texture — is as distinctive on the sacred material as on secular recordings, giving the gospel performances a contemplative depth that sets them apart from more exuberant revival-style treatments.
