Kentucky Colonels 1966

The Kentucky Colonels

Album · 1978 · Shiloh SLP 4084

Kentucky Colonels 1966, released on Rounder in 1978 from concert recordings made two years before the band's dissolution, documents the Colonels at their most adventurous and technically accomplished. Clarence White's flatpicking, by this point fully mature, was expanding the vocabulary of the acoustic guitar in ways that would influence decades of players. Roland White's mandolin and Roger Bush's bass anchor the ensemble, while the band's collective chemistry — always the Colonels' greatest asset — is on vivid display in the loose, exploratory live setting. The album confirms what musicians already knew: the Kentucky Colonels were the most harmonically adventurous acoustic string band of the 1960s.
