Live Sessions, Vol. 01 gathers eleven songs the Petersens had already put out on their YouTube channel, and the family band from Branson, Missouri, issued it themselves on 18 August 2020. Four tracks, “Jolene,” “No Roots,” “High Sierra” and “Gentle on My Mind,” were recorded at Digigrass, the Chapman family’s studio in Ozark, Missouri. The rest were performed live at various places in the Ozarks. The band lists Katie Petersen on fiddle, Ellen Petersen Haygood on banjo, Matt Petersen on guitar, Julianne Petersen on mandolin, Karen Petersen on bass and Emmett Franz on Dobro, with everyone except Karen singing.
Most of the program comes from outside songwriters: Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” John Hartford’s “Gentle on My Mind,” Harley Allen’s “High Sierra,” Michael Martin Murphey’s “Carolina in the Pines,” Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz’s “When You Say Nothing at All,” Bill Mack’s “Blue” and “No Roots” by Alice Merton and Nicholas Rebscher. “Farther Along” and “Near the Cross” are credited as traditional. Two songs were written in the band: “Moments,” by Emmett Franz, and the closing “California,” by Katie Petersen.
