Live Shows 1956-1960, released in 1974 to compile Flatt and Scruggs's broadcast performances of the duo's classic Foggy Mountain Boys years, draws on material from the Martha White Morning Shows, the New River Ranch outdoor concerts, Pet Milk's Grand Ole Opry segments, and various other television and radio appearances of the late 1950s. The recordings catch the band at its working peak, when the Foggy Mountain Boys were a tight road outfit cycling through Flatt's lead vocal, Scruggs's three-finger banjo, and the close harmony arrangements that defined them. Audio fidelity varies with the source, but the immediacy of the live performances offers a window the studio LPs of the period rarely opened.
