Old Country Church

Jim & Jesse

Album · 1964 · Epic BN 26107

Old Country Church is a 1964 album by Jim and Jesse McReynolds released on Epic Records (BN 26107), the duo's first all-gospel recording for the label. Recorded in a single April 1964 Nashville session at Columbia Studio and produced by Billy Sherrill, the album features Jim McReynolds (guitar, tenor vocals) and Jesse McReynolds (mandolin, lead vocals) backed by Allen Shelton (banjo), Floyd "Lightnin'" Chance (bass), and Jim Brock (drums)—an unusual configuration that omits fiddle, pushing the sound closer to Southern gospel quartet style than to the Virginia Boys' usual bluegrass lineup. Boots Randolph adds tambourine on one session. Note: Ray Edenton appears in the catalog personnel but is not confirmed on the documented session logs for this specific recording.
