Once Again From the Top Vol. 2

The Bluegrass Band

Album · 1990 · Hay Holler HHH 102

Once Again, From the Top, Volume 2 (Hay Holler HHH 102, 1990) belongs to a mail-order bluegrass collection created by banjoist Butch Robins and his business partner Kerry Hay of Blacksburg, Virginia. The Roanoke Times reported in March 1991 that Robins, a former Blue Grass Boy from Radford, and Hay had assembled a group of mostly Virginia musicians the previous October and recorded 39 of the best-known traditional bluegrass songs. They called the group The Bluegrass Band, named the album Once Again, From the Top, and began selling it through television commercials in December for $19.95; by early March they had sold about 4,000 copies of the three-record set.

The musicians credited on Volume 2 are Butch Robins on banjo, Wyatt Rice and Wayne Henderson on guitar, Larry Stephenson and Arnie Solomon on mandolin, Rickie Simpkins on fiddle and mandolin, and Ronnie Simpkins on bass. Robins and Hay are credited as producers. The fourteen tracks, on sides C and D of the LP, are mostly traditional songs and tunes, among them “Salty Dog Blues,” “John Henry,” “Cripple Creek,” “Molly and Tenbrooks” and “Orange Blossom Special,” with A. P. Carter’s “You Are My Flower” and “Foggy Mountain Top” also on the record. Rickie Simpkins sings lead on “Salty Dog Blues,” “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms” and “You Are My Flower,” and Larry Stephenson on “John Henry” and “Molly and Tenbrooks.”
