Palace of Songs

Jim & Jesse

Album · 1977 · Old Dominion OD 498-09

Palace of Songs is a Jim and Jesse McReynolds album released on Old Dominion OD-498-09, featuring Jesse McReynolds on mandolin, Jim McReynolds on guitar and lead vocals, Joe Stuart, Joe Meadows on fiddle, Garland Shuping, and Keith McReynolds on bass. The Virginia brothers, whose recording career stretched across more than five decades, are captured here in a mature, assured performance that draws on the deep well of American song from honky-tonk to bluegrass to gospel. Jesse's cross-picking mandolin technique — the defining innovation that set him apart from every other mandolinist in the genre — remains at the centre of the ensemble's identity. The recording reflects the McReynolds brothers' relaxed, authoritative command of their craft after a lifetime of professional performance.
